Spring 2023
Freestone rivers like the Big Wood experience flow states throughout the year because they rely on rainfall and snowmelt to sustain themselves. When the water exceeds the river's capacity, it spills over its banks, reclaiming the surrounding floodplain and redistributing sediments and nutrients along its course.
This can be devastating for individuals with homes in a floodplain. However, natural flooding is vital in maintaining the health and resiliency of the Big Wood River.
